"First Blood," starring Sylvester Stallone, is one of the rare movies that has created a character that is today known the world over. Telling the tale of a Vietnam vet with special skills who is unwittingly pushed into a corner by a stereotypical redneck sheriff, this is one action movie that is a must see. Not only does it have fantastic action seems, but also a tense psychological dramatic element as well.
The film begins with a drifter, a Vietnam vet, who makes the mistake of wandering into a small town. On the outside of town, he is met with some police who tell him that his kind is not welcome in this town. Drifters are not allowed, as they are perceived as vermin who will sap the cities resources without giving anything back. After giving him the warning, the police leave him, and think that is that.
However, our hero, John Rambo, shows up again in town, and is arrested. He gets booked, and thrown into the county lockup. He doesn't intend to hurt anybody, and he certainly hasn't broken any laws. All he wants is likely a place to sleep and something to eat. He may seem a little slow, but we feel for him, as the police seem to be mistreating him.
Then there is a fight, and the police chief steps over the line. And slightly injures this seemingly big brute. Drawing first blood, the sheriff has opened a can of worms he will soon regret, likely for the rest of his life. Because John Rambo is a highly trained killer, and well equipped to handle any kind of conflict, and come out on top.
Thus begins the epic battle of this film. One lone man, John Rambo, is pushed into a corner, and he responds with the only way he knows how. He retreats into the nearby hills, and quickly finds himself in his element. Trained to survive, to hunt, and to kill. The authorities rapidly figure out they have more than they can handle, and have to call for plenty of back up.
Then an army Colonel shows up, and claims that he was Rambo's commanding officer during the Vietnam war. The police mistakenly believe he is there to protect his charge from the police. But they have it the other way around. Rambo's CO is there to bring him back before he does irreversible harm to the entire police force. He is there to save the police from Rambo, not the other way around. We trail John Rambo through the mountains, and get to see him fight against his own demons in a film that has created one of the most memorable action heroes of all time. If you haven't seen this movie, you must, as it is an example of fantastic film making, acting, and directing.
